Youth athletes are ideal candidates for novel therapeutic motor learning interventions that leverage the plasticity of central nervous system to promote desirable biomechanical adaptions. We summarize empirical data supporting three pillars Optimizing Performance Through Intrinsic Motivation and Attention Learning (OPTIMAL) theory expand on potential neurophysiologic mechanisms will support enhanced movement mechanics in youth optimize prevention programs reduced injury risk, rehabilitation, exercise performance, play (Prevention Rehabilitation Exercise Play; PREP). Specifically, we highlight role motivational factors release dopamine could accelerate performance adaptations. Further, detail an external focus attention shift attentional allocation increase brain activity regions important sensorimotor integration facilitate primary cortex efficiency.
